A boy who was 13 at the time of the offence has been sentenced to life detention, with a minimum term of eight years and six months, for murdering fellow 13-year-old Jahziah Coke in Oldbury, Sandwell. Wolverhampton Crown Court heard that the defendant stabbed Coke twice in the chest and abdomen on 29 August 2024 during a row over missing cannabis. Passing sentence, Mrs Justice Tipples said she was sure the youth intended to kill after disarming his victim and launching a "nasty and violent attack". The judge accepted that the knife belonged to Coke but ruled the teenager’s response was completely out of proportion to any threat he faced. The defendant, who cannot be named because of his age, fled the scene, took two buses to a friend’s house and played video games before learning via social media that Coke had died. A jury convicted him of murder in April after rejecting his claim that the stabbing was accidental. Prosecutors and police said the case underscores the devastating impact of knife crime. The Crown Prosecution Service noted that while the sentence cannot undo the loss, it demonstrates that those who use knives to harm will face serious consequences.
