TikTok has eliminated additional roles in its US e-commerce arm, TikTok Shop, the third wave of staff reductions since April. An internal memo dated 2 July told employees the cuts were part of “organizational and personnel changes,” and said affected workers need not report to the office while transition arrangements are made. The company did not disclose how many jobs were lost, but workers in moderation, product and creator-support functions said they received termination notices. TikTok said it routinely reviews operations and is reallocating resources to “better align with strategic priorities.” The US Shop division has struggled to meet internal sales targets and has been squeezed by a 145% tariff on Chinese imports that took effect in April. As US staff have departed, managers based in China and Singapore have assumed greater oversight. Pressure is mounting as Washington requires ByteDance to sell TikTok’s US operations by October, a deadline that has already been extended twice. While trimming its US workforce, TikTok continues to expand elsewhere. On 1 July the company launched TikTok Shop in Japan, its 17th market, underscoring a strategy to diversify revenue amid uncertainty over its American future.
