Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. said on 20 Aug 2025 that its revival will exclude California, citing what Executive Chairman Marcus Lemonis called “one of the most over-regulated, expensive and risky environments for businesses in America.” The home-goods retailer plans to open more than 300 brick-and-mortar locations nationwide over the next two years, but none in the nation’s largest state. Lemonis added that the chain will serve Californians solely through BedBathandBeyond.com, promising delivery within 24 to 48 hours, in many cases the same day. “We’re taking a stand because it’s time for common sense,” he said, arguing that California’s higher taxes, mandatory wage levels and multiple fees would prevent the company from offering competitive prices and sustainable jobs. Governor Gavin Newsom’s press office dismissed the move, saying the state “thought Bed Bath & Beyond no longer existed” after the company’s 2023 bankruptcy, and wished it “well in its efforts to become relevant again.” Lemonis responded on social media that the decision was driven by economics, not politics, and urged state officials to reconsider policies he views as hostile to employers. The announcement is part of Bed Bath & Beyond’s comeback strategy following its Chapter 11 filing two years ago. Overstock.com bought the brand’s intellectual property for $21.5 million in 2023 and last month reverted its corporate name to Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. The first new concept store, Bed Bath & Beyond Home, opened in Nashville on 8 Aug 2025, and the company says additional small-format outlets will follow in most states—except California.
