Montreal police have arrested 23-year-old Sergio Yanes Preciado and charged him with assault causing bodily harm over the Aug. 8 beating of a Jewish father at Dickie-Moore Park in the city’s Parc-Extension neighbourhood, the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal said. The suspect was taken into custody on Aug. 11 after investigators, aided by community tips, identified him from widely circulated video of the incident. Footage shows the assailant pouring water on the 32-year-old victim, knocking him to the ground and repeatedly punching him in front of his young children before throwing the man’s kippah into a splash pad. The victim was treated in hospital for a broken nose; his children were not physically injured. Police said the inquiry continues to determine whether hate-crime provisions apply. Prime Minister Mark Carney, Quebec Premier François Legault, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante condemned the attack, calling it an unacceptable act of violence and pledging support for the Jewish community. Advocacy groups welcomed the arrest but urged prosecutors to pursue hate-motivated charges if the evidence supports them, noting a rise in antisemitic incidents in the city.
The attack on the religious Jewish dad in Montreal was completely unprovoked and out of the blue — started by the perp pouring a bottle of water on the dad before battering him with his fists. https://t.co/cfvAth8EYv
