Police in the Basque town of Errenteria detained a 19-year-old man on Monday after a routine check at the local railway station revealed an outstanding warrant from the Guardia Civil of Torre Pacheco, Murcia. The suspect is the third and allegedly principal participant in the beating of a 68-year-old resident of Torre Pacheco last week, an attack that ignited nights of unrest in the southeastern municipality. On Tuesday, the Juzgado de Instrucción Nº5 de Donostia-San Sebastián ordered the suspect held in provisional custody without bail on suspicion of causing serious injuries. The court also agreed to transfer the proceedings to San Javier, the judicial district that covers Torre Pacheco. The other two men accused of involvement in the assault had been arrested earlier in Murcia. The assault has fuelled racially charged disturbances in Torre Pacheco. According to the Guardia Civil, thirteen people have been arrested for violent incidents and more than 120 individuals have been identified, several carrying objects that could be used as weapons. Security forces have reinforced their presence in the town while investigators continue to monitor online calls for further violence.
