A Boston Municipal Court judge on Monday ordered Jermaiah Yusuf Sawaqed, a 25-year-old Everett resident, held on $30,000 bail after prosecutors accused him of a campaign of politically motivated vandalism in downtown Boston. Investigators say Sawaqed is linked to the Direct Action Movement for Palestinian Liberation, an extreme anti-Zionist group that has publicly urged attacks on government and corporate targets. According to a criminal complaint, Sawaqed splashed white paint mixed with feces on the Massachusetts State House gate in the early hours of 23 July, spray-painted graffiti on its columns and fled into Boston Common, where officers later found two suspected improvised incendiary devices. Police allege he also defaced the George Washington monument on 14 June and wrote anti-Israel slogans on an MIT lab building. A search of a vehicle he regularly used turned up DAMPL leaflets, empty gasoline cans and a device resembling those recovered in the park. Sawaqed faces counts of vandalism, destruction of property, vandalizing a war or veterans memorial and possession, transportation or use of a hoax device or substance. His mother, Naila Dahabrah, was separately arrested for spitting on a detective serving a search warrant. The court set Sawaqed’s next appearance for next week as state police and the FBI continue to investigate whether the incidents were coordinated with other acts claimed by DAMPL.
