Investigators in British Columbia say an osprey that dropped a fish onto overhead power lines ignited a brush fire roughly six kilometres south of the village of Ashcroft on 30 July. Embers from the live line set dry grass ablaze after the fish struck the cable, according to Ashcroft Fire Rescue. Firefighters, assisted by BC Hydro staff and local ranchers, contained the blaze with about 4,800 gallons of water. The incident briefly cut electricity to Ashcroft, but no injuries or structural damage were reported. Officials noted that the suspected osprey—unharmed—returned to its nest after the mishap.
