Chile’s state-owned miner Codelco said on Sunday that five workers have been found dead after a tunnel collapse in its El Teniente operation, the world’s largest underground copper mine. Search and rescue teams are continuing to comb the 4,500-kilometre tunnel network for the last missing miner more than three days after the accident. The rockfall struck the Teniente 7 section on 31 July, minutes after a magnitude-4.3 earthquake shook the O’Higgins Region, according to geophysical assessments cited by authorities. Truck operator Paulo Marín was recovered first, while the bodies of colleagues Gonzalo, Álex, Carlos and a fifth co-worker were located over the weekend. President Gabriel Boric has visited the site twice, saying that “our energies are on the rescue” and promising “justice and clarity” once the emergency ends. The regional Labor Directorate opened an investigation into possible safety lapses, working alongside the Public Prosecutor’s Office and police specialists. Former mining minister Laurence Golborne has joined a technical council supporting the rescue effort, and the municipalities of Rancagua and Machalí have declared days of mourning. After inspecting the collapsed gallery, Codelco chairman Máximo Pacheco said, “El corazón de Codelco está roto… es una empresa devastada por el dolor.”
