Codelco has intensified rescue operations at its flagship El Teniente mine after finding the remains of one of five workers trapped by a tunnel collapse triggered by a 4.3-magnitude tremor on 31 July. The discovery, confirmed on Saturday, raises the death toll to two, following a fatality reported immediately after the incident that also left nine people injured. Rescue teams have suspended all production and are excavating the blocked gallery from two fronts. By Saturday afternoon they had cleared about 20 metres of debris—roughly one-fifth of the 90 metres that separate them from the presumed refuge—leaving an estimated 70 metres still to remove. Managers caution that progress will slow as they work with greater care after the latest fatal finding. President Gabriel Boric travelled to Rancagua to oversee the effort and pledged that “no resource will be spared”. Prosecutors and police investigators have entered the mine to determine whether the collapse stemmed from natural seismic activity or mining operations. Former mining minister Laurence Golborne, who oversaw the 2010 San José rescue, has joined an international advisory council convened by Codelco. El Teniente, the world’s largest underground copper operation and central to Codelco’s expansion plans, remains shut while more than 100 specialists labour around the clock. The company said it will continue the search for the four remaining missing miners and will not resume production until their whereabouts are resolved and safety conditions are re-evaluated.
