China reiterated on Monday that Taiwan is "an internal affair" after U.S. President Donald Trump said Chinese leader Xi Jinping had assured him Beijing would not invade the self-ruled island during Trump’s current term in office. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters in Beijing that Taiwan is “an inalienable part of Chinese territory” and that the resolution of the issue “is a matter for the Chinese people.” She added that China would continue to seek peaceful reunification but “will never allow anyone or any force to separate Taiwan from China in any way.” Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry responded that it closely monitors high-level U.S.–China interactions and will keep working with partners that have “significant interests” in the Indo-Pacific to preserve stability in the Taiwan Strait. Washington remains Taipei’s most important arms supplier and unofficial ally despite the lack of formal diplomatic ties.
