Brazil and China have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly study and plan a transcontinental railway project connecting Brazil's Atlantic coast to Peru's Pacific coast. The proposed bioceanic corridor will link the Brazilian state of Acre and the port of Chancay in Peru, a megaport inaugurated in 2024 with Chinese financing. The railway aims to integrate existing Brazilian rail networks, including the Integração Oeste-Leste, Centro-Oeste, and Norte-Sul railways, facilitating export routes to China and other Asian markets. The corridor is expected to run approximately 4,500 kilometers, crossing the Andes Mountains, and is seen as a strategic infrastructure project to enhance trade connectivity between South America and Asia. This agreement was formalized during the BRICS summit and is part of broader cooperation between the two countries, which includes over 30 agreements signed recently covering mining, infrastructure, ports, and aviation. China remains Brazil's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $160 billion in 2024.
