On July 7, 2025, the governments of Brazil and China signed a memorandum of understanding to initiate joint studies and planning for a transcontinental railway project connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The proposed bioceanic corridor will link the Brazilian state of Bahia, including the integration of existing railways such as the Integração Oeste-Leste, Centro-Oeste, and Ferrovia Norte-Sul, to the recently inaugurated megaport of Chancay in Peru, which was constructed with Chinese financing and opened in 2024. The railway will traverse from Acre in Brazil to the Peruvian coast, crossing the Andes, and aims to facilitate exports to China and other Asian markets by providing a direct logistical connection between the two oceans. The project represents a strategic infrastructure partnership between Brazil and China, with the Chinese government and companies participating in feasibility studies and planning efforts. Approximately 31.7% of Brazil's exports and 29.2% of Peru's exports currently go to China, highlighting the economic significance of this corridor. The initiative was announced during the BRICS summit and is expected to enhance regional integration and trade connectivity in South America.
