China has set new records in renewable energy capacity additions in 2024 and early 2025, solidifying its position as the global leader in solar and wind power. Between January and May 2025, China installed 198 gigawatts (GW) of solar power and 46 GW of wind power, generating enough electricity to match the total output of countries like Indonesia, Turkey, and Poland. In May 2025 alone, China installed 93 GW of solar panels, nearly double the total solar capacity installed in the United States during the entire year of 2024. The total installed solar capacity in China now exceeds 1,000 GW. In 2024, China added 445 GW of renewable power, accounting for 60% of global renewable capacity additions, more than double the combined additions of the rest of the world. China also leads the world in installed wind capacity, producing more wind-generated electricity than any other country, with wind energy output in 2024 reaching approximately 997 terawatt-hours (TWh), about 22% of total U.S. electricity consumption. These developments highlight China's rapid expansion in renewable energy infrastructure, including advances such as industrial-scale production of perovskite solar panels. The scale of China's renewable energy growth contrasts with the United States, which has installed significantly less capacity historically.
