China’s Foreign Ministry on 27 August called on Washington to stop what it described as the “groundless harassment, interrogation and repatriation” of Chinese nationals studying in the United States. Spokesperson Guo said Beijing expects the U.S. to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the students and to follow through on former President Donald Trump’s earlier pledge to welcome them. The ministry’s comments add a fresh point of friction to already strained bilateral ties and come as both governments weigh next steps in education and visa policy. Chinese officials have repeatedly argued that academic exchanges serve the interests of both countries and should not be politicised. In a separate briefing, the ministry said Beijing seeks continuity and stability in its policy toward South Korea and hopes Seoul will cooperate in advancing the China–South Korea strategic cooperative partnership.

China hopes the US will follow through on President Trump’s welcoming remarks by ending the unwarranted harassment, questioning and deportation of Chinese students, and genuinely safeguarding their legitimate rights and interests, said Guo. https://t.co/XOUN17uX3k
