China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao said on Friday that the nation’s economic fundamentals remain sound and that its export sector continues to display resilience despite a challenging global environment. He cited policy support that has enabled Chinese exporters to “defy trends” and argued that periods of stress highlight the advantages of China’s economic system. Turning to the United States, Wang acknowledged that bilateral economic and trade relations have “weathered storms” since Washington began adopting more unilateral and protectionist measures in 2018. Nevertheless, he stressed that mutual benefit remains the foundation of the relationship and that the two economies remain critical to each other. Wang pointed to the Geneva Agreement and the London Framework as examples of how structured dialogue has helped stabilise trade ties and ease tensions. He said both sides have learned from recent fluctuations and called for renewed dialogue that respects each country’s core interests and major concerns. Beijing’s goal, Wang added, is to restore the China-US trade relationship to a healthy and sustainable trajectory. He argued that differences and frictions are inevitable but can be managed through consultation and cooperation.
