Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, a member of the Communist Party of China’s Politburo, arrived in Kabul on 20 August for an official visit. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Wang would take part in the sixth China-Afghanistan-Pakistan Trilateral Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue, where he met Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to discuss expanding economic, trade and technical cooperation. Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar also flew to the Afghan capital to represent Islamabad in the three-way talks, which seek to strengthen regional security and development coordination among the neighbouring states. Beijing and Islamabad confirmed that Wang will travel on to Islamabad between 20 and 22 August to co-chair the sixth round of the China-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue with Dar on 21 August. The back-to-back meetings highlight China’s push to deepen ties with Pakistan while maintaining direct engagement with Afghanistan’s Taliban-led administration.
