Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Kabul on 20 August for the sixth China-Afghanistan-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue, after concluding a visit to India. He was joined by Pakistan’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Ishaq Dar, and Afghan acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. The meetings mark the first visit to Afghanistan by a senior Chinese official since the Taliban took power in 2021. According to the Afghan foreign ministry, Wang told Muttaqi that Beijing wants Afghanistan to formally join the Belt and Road Initiative and begin ‘practical’ mining projects this year. The two sides also discussed removing barriers to agricultural trade and expanding economic, technical and transit cooperation. Pakistani and Afghan officials said the three countries agreed in principle to extend the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor into Afghanistan. Security dominated the talks. Dar cited a recent spike in attacks inside Pakistan by groups operating from Afghan territory and urged Kabul to take “concrete and verifiable” steps against Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan and the Balochistan Liberation Army. A joint statement said the three governments would intensify counter-terrorism coordination while pushing ahead with political and economic collaboration. Wang Yi is scheduled to travel on to Islamabad on 21 August to co-chair the sixth China-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue, underscoring Beijing’s broader regional diplomacy aimed at linking South and Central Asia through infrastructure and trade corridors.
