Tesla Inc. plans to launch a new six-seat variant of its Model Y SUV, named the Model Y L, in China this fall. The company officially announced the launch on its Weibo account and has submitted the necessary paperwork to China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The Model Y L features an extended wheelbase of 3,040 mm, making it approximately 7 inches longer than the current Model Y, with overall dimensions of 4,976 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,668 mm in height. It weighs 2,088 kg (4,605 lbs), about 209 lbs heavier than the current Model Y AWD, and is equipped with dual motors producing 142 kW and 198 kW, enabling a top speed of 201 km/h. The vehicle is designed as a true three-row SUV to meet growing demand for six-seat cars in China, where annual sales of such vehicles exceed 700,000 units, often priced above 300,000 RMB. Tesla's introduction of the Model Y L comes amid increased competition from domestic automakers and a sales decline in the Chinese market during the first half of 2025. The new model also includes design updates such as new wheels, seats, a light gold exterior paint option, a modified rear and C-pillar design, and a new spoiler. Tesla aims to bolster its market share in China with this larger, roomier Model Y variant, which has been spotted on roads ahead of its official release.
