Southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region plans to spend an additional 2 billion yuan (about $280 million) on 10 livelihood programmes covering income support, childcare, elderly services and healthcare, according to regional authorities. The measures expand on existing social spending as the region prepares to mark the 60th anniversary of its founding later this year. The commitment comes amid solid economic momentum. Xizang’s GDP rose 6.3 percent in 2024 to 276.5 billion yuan, while per-capita disposable income grew 6.8 percent in urban areas and 8.3 percent in rural areas. Official data show all registered rural residents have been lifted out of extreme poverty, helped by improved transport links that have doubled the road network to 120,000 kilometres since 2012. Tourism and clean energy are underpinning growth. The region hosted more than 63 million visitors in 2024, generating 74.5 billion yuan in spending. In Nyingchi—positioned as a southeastern gateway—GDP reached 26.7 billion yuan last year; the city welcomed 15.31 million tourists and logged foreign-trade growth of more than 573 percent. Beijing is also highlighting cultural ties as part of the anniversary. President Xi Jinping, in a June 2025 letter to villagers in Galai, praised rising incomes from the area’s “peach blossom economy,” underscoring the government’s focus on rural revitalisation alongside the new funding package.
