The Colombian Navy has announced the first seizure of an unmanned narco-submarine in South American waters, intercepted near the city of Santa Marta off the Caribbean coast. The semi-submersible vessel, believed to belong to the Gulf Clan—the largest drug trafficking group in Colombia—was equipped with a Starlink satellite antenna, enabling remote control and automated navigation. The narco-submarine has the capacity to transport more than 1.5 tons of cocaine, although it was not carrying drugs at the time of capture. Authorities consider this interception a test run by the cartel to employ advanced technology for drug trafficking, which could reduce exposure by operating unmanned and evading radar detection. This development marks a new chapter in the technological arms race between drug cartels and law enforcement in the region.
