Sony Group Corp. said lifetime sales of its PlayStation 5 have reached 80.3 million units, nearly five years after the console debuted in November 2020. The milestone, disclosed in the company’s fiscal first-quarter results, puts the PS5 on pace with the PlayStation 4 and edges it closer to the 87.4 million total set by the PlayStation 3. Sony shipped 2.5 million PS5 consoles in the quarter ended 30 June, roughly 100,000 more than a year earlier, despite a relatively light slate of first-party releases. Software demand remained strong: combined PS4 and PS5 game sales rose to 65.9 million units, with digital downloads accounting for 83% of the total. The company’s Game & Network Services segment generated revenue of ¥936.5 billion ($6.3 billion), an 8% increase from a year ago, while operating income more than doubled to ¥148 billion as higher digital game sales, downloadable content and network services offset flat hardware margins. Monthly active users on PlayStation Network climbed to 123 million, up 7 million year-on-year.
