An anti-government militia that calls itself Veterans on Patrol has claimed responsibility for disabling a television station’s weather radar in northeast Oklahoma City and says it intends to knock out 15 similar installations across the state. Surveillance footage released by News 9 shows Anthony Mitchell damaging the power supply to the station’s NextGen Live Doppler unit before his arrest on an unrelated charge. Group founder Michael Lewis Arthur Meyer told local media his followers regard Doppler and NexRad systems as “energy weapons” the government uses to manipulate the atmosphere, a claim meteorologists dismiss. “Our goal is to take out 15 energy weapons in this state, and we want to do it simultaneously,” Meyer said, adding that heightened security around the towers would not deter the effort. The attack came days after catastrophic flooding in Texas killed dozens of people, underscoring the importance of uninterrupted radar data for storm tracking. A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration official responded that radar emissions cannot alter weather, but are vital for timely warnings. State and federal investigators are assessing damage, reviewing security at other radar sites and weighing additional charges linked to the sabotage.
