Canadian authorities have charged four individuals, including active members of the Canadian Armed Forces, in connection with an alleged extremist plot to forcibly take possession of land near Quebec City. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) stated that the suspects planned to establish an anti-government militia and had engaged in military-style training, including shooting, ambush, survival, and navigation exercises. In January 2024, law enforcement seized an arsenal comprising 16 explosive devices, 83 firearms, 11,000 rounds of ammunition, 130 magazines, four night vision goggles, and other military equipment from the group. The suspects reportedly aimed to use the land as a base to build their militia or to start a “new society.” Investigations revealed that they had recruited approximately fifteen members and intended to take refuge in a controlled harvesting zone (ZEC) north of Quebec City. The RCMP has also highlighted concerns about online radicalization in relation to the case. The arrests have drawn attention in local communities near Quebec City, with family members stating that the accused were not against the Canadian Armed Forces but sought to improve their military performance. The case remains under investigation.
