The Pretoria High Court on Friday granted a defence request for an in-loco inspection in Vosloorus, moving the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial from the courtroom to the township where accused No. 1, Muzi Sibiya, says police beat him after his 2020 arrest. Sibiya demonstrated to the court how he was allegedly assaulted at the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department precinct, a short distance from the Khumalo family home where the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was fatally shot in 2014. Defence lawyers contend the alleged assault could taint confessions and other evidence the state plans to rely on. Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng, prosecutors and legal teams accompanied the accused to the site as part of efforts to test the credibility of the claims. The on-site inspection comes as the high-profile case—now in its second year—continues against five men charged with murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
