California’s Board of Parole Hearings rejected Erik Menendez’s bid for release on Thursday, ruling after an all-day suitability hearing that the 54-year-old still poses an unreasonable risk to public safety. Menendez, who attended via video link from the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, will not be eligible to reapply for parole until 2028. The decision comes three months after Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic resentenced Erik and his older brother, Lyle, from life without parole to 50 years to life, immediately qualifying them for youth-offender parole consideration because they were under 26 at the time of the crime. Both men have spent more than 35 years in prison for the shotgun killings of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, in the family’s Beverly Hills mansion in 1989. Board commissioners highlighted a history of prison violations—including possession of contraband cellphones—and cited a recent risk assessment that placed Menendez at a “moderate” danger level. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who opposes the brothers’ release, argued Menendez has not shown full insight into the murders despite his description of the acts as “cruel and vicious.” Supporters, including several relatives, urged the panel to recognize what they called extensive rehabilitation work behind bars. Lyle Menendez, 57, is scheduled to appear before a separate parole panel on Friday. Any grant of parole would undergo a 120-day administrative review before reaching Governor Gavin Newsom, who holds final authority to affirm, reverse or modify the board’s recommendation.
