Prosecutors in Riverside County, California have charged Jake Haro, 32, and Rebecca Haro, 41, with murder in the presumed death of their seven-month-old son, Emmanuel, who has been missing since 14 August. The couple were arrested at their Cabazon home on 22 August after a week-long investigation led by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. In addition to the murder counts, the parents face a misdemeanor allegation of filing a false police report. Investigators say Rebecca Haro told deputies she was knocked unconscious while changing the infant’s diaper outside a sporting-goods store in Yucaipa and awoke to find Emmanuel gone, but inconsistencies in her account and subsequent evidence prompted authorities to discard the kidnapping narrative. The child’s body has not been located. On 24 August, detectives, cadaver dogs and the boy’s father combed hilly terrain off State Route 60 near Moreno Valley without success. Officials have executed multiple search warrants at the family residence and in nearby communities and are reviewing extensive surveillance footage. Both defendants appeared briefly in a Riverside County courtroom on 26 August, where bail was set at $1 million each. They remain in custody and are scheduled to return for arraignment on 4 September. A conviction on the murder charges carries a potential sentence of life without parole and could qualify for the death penalty under California law.
