A rifle-wielding gunman opened fire during a morning mass at Annunciation Catholic School in south Minneapolis on Wednesday, killing two children, ages 8 and 10, and wounding at least 17 other people before fatally shooting himself, police said. The attack began around 8:20 a.m., minutes after the kindergarten-through-eighth-grade school’s weekly service started, and lasted several minutes as the assailant fired dozens of rounds through the church’s stained-glass windows. Police Chief Brian O’Hara told reporters that the shooter, described as a man dressed entirely in black, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the building. The victims include 14 children; two remain in critical condition at area hospitals. Initial estimates put the total number of injured at about 20. Authorities said there is no continuing threat to the public. Federal agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined Minneapolis police and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension at the scene. Governor Tim Walz called the assault a “horrific act of violence,” while Mayor Jacob Frey said the city’s emergency operations center had been activated. President Donald Trump said he had been fully briefed and that the White House would monitor developments. The shooting occurred during the first week of the academic year and followed several unrelated shootings in Minneapolis over the previous 24 hours. Investigators have not disclosed a motive or the weapon’s model, and the identities of the gunman and the victims were not immediately released. Officials plan to provide further details as the investigation progresses.
