U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Philadelphia’s international mail center have confiscated 57 pounds of ketamine concealed in five trans-Atlantic parcels, the agency said on Thursday. The first seizure, on 21 June, uncovered 28 pounds of the anesthetic packed inside buckets labelled as fishing rods in a consignment from the Netherlands to Miami. A second interception on 27 June involved four parcels sent from Germany and declared as toys and picture frames; officers opened the packages to find a further 29 pounds of the drug. CBP estimates the haul’s street value at roughly $1.5 million. The packages were addressed to multiple locations in South Florida, including Broward County. No arrests have been announced, and Homeland Security Investigations is leading the inquiry into the trafficking network. Ketamine, a veterinary anesthetic that can be abused as a hallucinogen or incapacitating agent, is classified as a Schedule III controlled substance in the United States.
