Russia’s Federal Customs Service, working with the Federal Security Service, confiscated 820 kilograms of cocaine concealed in a container of bananas that had arrived from Ecuador at a Baltic Sea port, the agency said in a statement. Officials put the street value of the haul at more than $150 million, or about 12 billion rubles, making it the largest seizure of Latin American cocaine in Russia so far this year. The narcotics were packed in one-kilogram briquettes bearing a luxury-brand logo and hidden under the container floor, according to the authorities. A criminal investigation has been opened under Article 229.1 of Russia’s criminal code for large-scale drug smuggling, an offence that carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Law-enforcement agencies continue to search for the individuals behind the shipment.
