
A recent report by the Smithsonian's internal Office of the Inspector General revealed that the institution misused a portion of the $7.5 million it received in Covid relief funds from the 2020 CARES Act. Additionally, federal agencies have been reported to have made $2.7 trillion in improper payments since 2003, with nearly a quarter of a trillion dollars in improper payments occurring just this year, according to a new Government Accountability Office (GAO) report.
