Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen on 27 August summoned U.S. charge d’affaires Mark Stroh after the national broadcaster DR reported that Americans with ties to President Donald Trump have been running covert influence operations in Greenland, the Arctic territory that forms part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Citing eight unnamed sources in Denmark, Greenland and the United States, DR said at least three U.S. citizens recently travelled to Greenland to collect information on local figures who might support or oppose closer ties with Washington and to cultivate contacts among business and political leaders. Denmark’s Security and Intelligence Service separately warned that Greenland has been targeted by influence campaigns aimed at sowing discord between Copenhagen and Nuuk. Rasmussen called any outside interference in the kingdom’s internal affairs “unacceptable” and said the ministry had demanded explanations from the U.S. embassy. The embassy has not commented publicly. The episode deepens diplomatic friction between the NATO allies as Trump continues to voice interest in bringing the resource-rich island under American control, a proposal repeatedly rejected by both Denmark and Greenland.
