Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Monday urged Elon Musk to abandon plans for a new “America Party” and instead marshal his wealth and influence behind two long-sought constitutional amendments: a balanced-budget requirement and term limits for members of Congress. Speaking at a press conference on 7 July, DeSantis praised the Tesla and SpaceX chief as an “innovative entrepreneur” whose prior work at the federal Department of Government Efficiency showed a commitment to reining in spending. But he warned that running third-party candidates in competitive districts would likely split the Republican vote and deliver victories to Democrats. DeSantis said a more effective approach would be to help the states reach the 34-state threshold needed to convene an Article V convention. Roughly 28 states have already passed resolutions calling for a balanced-budget amendment, he noted, adding that Musk’s participation could provide the “monumental impact” required to secure the remaining support. The governor argued that structural reforms, rather than electing “a few better people,” are essential to curb federal deficits and reduce incumbency advantages in Washington.
