Johnson, who had regularly consulted Musk while the billionaire headed the Department of Government Efficiency, recounted sending a lengthy text that went unanswered after the number switch. He attributed Musk’s rupture with the administration to the entrepreneur’s public denunciation of the bill as "pork-filled" and harmful to deficit-reduction efforts—an area Johnson acknowledged they both view as a top national-security concern. The Speaker said he continues to seek reconciliation between Musk and Trump and expressed respect for Musk’s intellect despite what he called the tech executive’s limited experience in legislative drafting.
