House Speaker Mike Johnson said in an episode of the "Pod Force One" podcast released 16 July that Elon Musk changed his mobile phone number and stopped responding to Johnson’s messages after a falling-out with President Donald Trump over the recently enacted One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a sweeping tax-and-spending measure signed on 4 July. Johnson, who had regularly consulted Musk while the billionaire headed the Department of Government Efficiency, recounted sending a lengthy text that went unanswered after the number switch. He attributed Musk’s rupture with the administration to the entrepreneur’s public denunciation of the bill as "pork-filled" and harmful to deficit-reduction efforts—an area Johnson acknowledged they both view as a top national-security concern. The Speaker said he continues to seek reconciliation between Musk and Trump and expressed respect for Musk’s intellect despite what he called the tech executive’s limited experience in legislative drafting. White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, speaking on an earlier episode of the podcast, confirmed tensions but called the dispute "a little hiccup" in what had been a productive relationship.
