Assets held by exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the US have reached a significant milestone, hitting $10 trillion for the first time. The ETF industry has seen rapid growth, doubling its assets in just 3.7 years, a shorter period compared to the usual five years. The top three ETF issuers now control 75% of the market share, with iShares striving to maintain its lead over Vanguard. Fidelity has also entered the top 10 issuers. The first ETF, SPY, was launched in January 1993, and the industry has grown steadily, reaching $1 trillion in 2010 and $10 trillion in September 2024. ETFs now hold double the assets of index mutual funds. As of August 31, ETFs accounted for 32.4% of the combined mutual fund and ETF market.
