Egyptian authorities have arrested Linda Martino, an Italian citizen and popular belly dancer with about two million Instagram followers, on allegations that her performances and social-media videos “incited vice” and offended public morality. Police in Cairo detained Martino several weeks ago and a court has now renewed her custody for a further 15 days while the investigation continues. The Italian embassy in Cairo has formally requested information on Martino’s condition and legal status, but officials say the Egyptian government has yet to respond. Cairo maintains that the performer is an Egyptian national despite her Italian passport, complicating consular access and raising the case’s diplomatic profile in Rome. Martino’s arrest is the latest in a series of morality prosecutions under President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s government. Egyptian courts have jailed at least five belly dancers over the past two years on similar charges, part of a wider clampdown that has also targeted singers and actors for content deemed incompatible with conservative social values.
Le indagini sostengono che Linda ha usato “tecniche di seduzione e danze provocanti per incitare al vizio”. ➡️ https://t.co/OF92ebJLVb https://t.co/FkC4hQMwDC
