Egyptian authorities have responded with force to activists participating in humanitarian efforts aimed at Gaza. Reports indicate that security forces beat, detained, and deported activists involved in the Soumoud Convoy and the Maghreb Gaza convoy, which sought to deliver aid to Gaza. Passports were confiscated in some cases, and activists were barred from reaching Gaza. These actions have sparked protests across Europe, with activists in the Netherlands, Norway, and Finland locking the doors of Egyptian embassies in protest of the ongoing closure of the Rafah border crossing. Additionally, a group of young activists in Egypt stormed the State Security headquarters in Helwan, demanding the release of detainees and protesting the blockade of Rafah and the resulting humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The Egyptian Interior Ministry denied reports of any officer being detained during the incident. The activists involved in the Helwan incident have communicated that their actions were intended to awaken Egyptian society to the plight of Gaza’s besieged population and to resist ongoing repression.
