The European Space Agency (ESA) has shortlisted five companies for the next phase of its European Launcher Challenge, aimed at advancing small rocket launch capabilities in Europe. The selected companies are Isar Aerospace and Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) from Germany, MaiaSpace from France, PLD Space from Spain, and Orbex from the United Kingdom. These firms were chosen from an initial pool of 12 applicants and will compete for potential funding of 169 million euros, which will be decided at ESA's council meeting in November 2025. The challenge seeks to enhance European sovereignty in space launches and foster competition against established global players. ESA's selection reflects a balance between technical innovation, market potential, and political considerations. This initiative is part of a broader effort to develop a European equivalent to SpaceX, with the Ariane 6 rocket also entering the competitive landscape.
