The European Space Agency (ESA) has shortlisted five companies from Germany, Spain, France, and the United Kingdom for the next phase of its European Launcher Challenge. These companies—Isar Aerospace and Rocket Factory Augsburg from Germany, MaiaSpace from France, PLD Space from Spain, and Orbex from the UK—were selected from an initial pool of 12 bidders. The challenge aims to foster competition among European mini-launcher developers and advance the continent's space transportation capabilities. The shortlisted firms will be considered for funding totaling 169 million euros at ESA's November council meeting. ESA now faces the task of evaluating the technical and market potential of these contenders while balancing political considerations. The competition is viewed as a key step toward establishing a competitive European alternative in the small satellite launch market.
