The European Commission said it will suspend for six months the two packages of retaliatory tariffs it had prepared in response to new U.S. duties, after reaching a preliminary accord with President Donald Trump. Commission trade spokesman Olof Gill stated that the countermeasures—covering roughly €93 billion of U.S. imports and scheduled to take effect on 7 August—will be put on hold while Brussels and Washington draft a joint statement agreed on 27 July. Gill added that the measures can be reinstated at any time if negotiations stall. The truce follows Trump’s executive order last week imposing a 15% tariff on most European goods. Key issues, including duties on cars, steel, aluminium and spirits, remain unresolved, and EU officials expect further U.S. actions. Brussels hopes the pause will stabilise trans-Atlantic trade while details of the broader agreement are finalised.
