The European Commission said Monday it will suspend for six months the two packages of retaliatory tariffs it had prepared against U.S. goods, following a political agreement reached with President Donald Trump on 27 July. The measures, covering imports worth roughly €93 billion, were designed to answer Washington’s duties on steel and aluminium as well as the White House’s plan to impose a 15 % levy on most European products. They were due to take effect on 7 August. Brussels said the pause is intended to give negotiators time to finalise a joint statement that would set the overall tariff ceiling at 15 % and avert an escalation of trans-Atlantic trade tensions. A Commission spokesperson added that further executive orders from the U.S. are expected as details are worked out, including possible carve-outs for sectors such as automobiles and spirits. The decision comes as tariff collections have become a significant revenue source for Washington. U.S. customs receipts reached a record US$29.6 billion in July, lifting fiscal-year revenue to about US$152 billion, according to Treasury data.
