Washington, D.C.’s violent-crime crackdown is showing rapid results less than a month after President Donald Trump invoked emergency powers to federalize the Metropolitan Police Department and deploy National Guard troops. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who initially criticized the move, told reporters on Wednesday that carjackings have fallen 87 percent and overall reported crime is down 15 percent compared with the same 20-day stretch last year. The Guard has been patrolling high-crime corridors and, at federal direction, assisting with trash removal and graffiti cleanup around landmarks and transit hubs. The performance shift is bolstering public support for the intervention. An AP-NORC survey of 1,182 adults conducted Aug. 21-25 puts Trump’s overall job approval at 45 percent—his highest reading in that series—while 53 percent endorse his handling of crime. The poll also found that 81 percent of Americans consider crime in large cities a “major problem” and that 55 percent view the use of military personnel to aid local police as acceptable. A separate Harvard CAPS/Harris poll found 54 percent of registered voters deem the president’s D.C. takeover justified. The White House says the 30-day surge that began Aug. 7 could serve as a template for other metropolitan areas, although Bowser signaled she would prefer to resume local control once crime levels stabilize. Civil-liberties groups and some Democratic lawmakers argue that the federal presence sets a troubling precedent, but Bowser’s unusual bipartisan applause underscores the political potency of the crime issue heading into next year’s municipal and congressional budget talks.
