A trio of senior Democrats—Senator Richard Blumenthal and Representatives Jamie Raskin and Bobby Scott—have demanded records from acting Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Chair Andrea Lucas over what they describe as the agency’s role in a pressure campaign orchestrated by former President Donald Trump against major U.S. law firms. In a letter dated 9 July, the lawmakers said Lucas helped broker deals in which nine firms collectively pledged about $940 million in pro bono legal work favored by the Trump administration. The arrangements allegedly led the EEOC to drop investigations into the firms’ diversity, equity and inclusion practices and allowed the firms to avoid Trump executive orders that would have restricted their federal work and access. The controversy stems from EEOC letters Lucas sent on 17 March to 20 large firms seeking detailed demographic hiring data. Six firms—Kirkland & Ellis, Latham & Watkins, Simpson Thacher, A&O Shearman, Skadden and Milbank—subsequently reached agreements with the White House that ended the agency probes. Courts have since blocked some of the executive actions that had targeted the firms. Blumenthal, Raskin and Scott contend that Lucas violated EEOC confidentiality rules and federal law by publicizing the inquiries. They have given her until 25 July to produce correspondence with the White House and internal documents related to the settlements. An EEOC spokesperson said the agency is reviewing the request, while the White House did not immediately comment.
