Republican-led states are reinforcing President Donald Trump’s public-safety operation in Washington, D.C., by sending their own National Guard contingents. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey on 16 August became the first to commit, authorising 300–400 soldiers along with mission-essential equipment financed by the federal government. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has since approved a 200-member detachment, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine pledged 150 military police, and Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves ordered 200 troops to the capital. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee later cleared deployments of roughly 135 and 160 soldiers, respectively, lifting the out-of-state total to more than 1,100 Guard members on top of the 800 District of Columbia troops Trump activated on 11 August. The first arrivals from West Virginia, South Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana were reported on 19 August. According to the White House, Guard personnel are securing federal buildings and backing law-enforcement operations rather than directly policing city streets. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said 465 arrests have been made and 59 firearms seized in the 12 days since the surge began. Trump’s executive order declared a “crime emergency,” temporarily placing the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control while federal agents from agencies including the FBI patrol the city. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, citing a 26 percent drop in violent crime from a year earlier, argues the additional soldiers are unwarranted and has joined civil-liberties groups in challenging the federal intervention. Governors emphasise that the deployments can be rescinded if emergencies arise in their home states, and the Pentagon has not indicated whether further requests for National Guard resources are forthcoming.

Question for MAGA: Why is Mississippi sending troops to DC when it has a higher crime rate? Why should a wealthy blue state that doesn't need the attention, get all the attention?
