President Donald Trump on Monday signed a presidential proclamation declaring Aug. 26, 2025 a national day of remembrance marking the fourth anniversary of the Abbey Gate suicide attack in Kabul that killed 13 U.S. service members during the chaotic 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. Surrounded by Gold Star families in the Oval Office, Trump said the bombing was “the worst and most embarrassing day in the history of our country” and pledged the fallen would “never be forgotten.” Vice President JD Vance told the relatives, “We’re so proud of your loved ones for giving their lives for our country.” The proclamation directs federal agencies to honor the victims’ sacrifice and encourages Americans to observe a moment of silence on Aug. 26. The Kabul airport attack, carried out by an Islamic State affiliate, was the deadliest day for U.S. forces in Afghanistan in more than a decade and became a political flash-point over the conduct of the withdrawal.
