President Donald Trump has revoked Washington, D.C.’s long-standing sanctuary-city policy after placing the nation’s capital under temporary federal control. Border czar Tom Homan said on Wednesday that “D.C. under federal control is not a sanctuary city” and that undocumented immigrants with criminal records will be turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The shift follows Trump’s decision earlier this week to invoke Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, giving the White House authority over the Metropolitan Police Department for up to 30 days unless Congress extends the period. About 800 National Guard troops have also been deployed to the city, a move the administration says is intended to curb crime. Ending the District’s sanctuary status overturns local rules that had limited cooperation with federal immigration agents. Homan predicted a rise in deportations from the capital, while critics contend the measures test the legal limits on federal power over the city.
