The White House said Wednesday that law-enforcement agencies have made 630 arrests and seized 86 illegal firearms in Washington, D.C., since President Donald Trump declared a public-safety emergency and assumed temporary control of the city’s police force on Aug. 7. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reported 53 additional arrests overnight, bringing the total past the 600 mark two weeks into the operation. Trump invoked Section 740 of the Home Rule Act to federalize the Metropolitan Police Department for up to 30 days and deployed National Guard troops and federal agents to support local officers. Bondi also installed Drug Enforcement Administration chief Terry Cole as her designee inside the department, while U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro coordinates prosecutions. Earlier updates had cited 300 arrests on Aug. 18 and more than 550 by Aug. 20, underscoring the rapid pace of detentions. Administration officials credit the crackdown with sharp declines in key crime categories. According to figures shared by the FBI and the D.C. Police Union, the capital has logged seven straight days without a homicide, carjackings are down 83 percent, robberies 46 percent, violent crime 22 percent and overall reported crime 8 percent since the emergency order took effect. Independent verification of the numbers remains limited. The Washington Post noted that detailed information on who was arrested and on what charges has not been fully disclosed, and some analysts point out that adult arrest totals are only modestly higher than comparable periods last year. District officials, who are challenging the federal intervention in court, have urged greater transparency as the 30-day takeover approaches its midpoint.
From August 11-20, 2024, DC police made 599 adult arrests, so this is at most a mild increase despite flooding the streets with hundreds of troops and LEOs. Plus, Bondi isn’t specifying adult arrests so that tally could include juveniles and be lower for just adults. https://t.co/5a3ZEPHzjd
FBI Director Kash Patel on DC's crackdown on crime: "In just one week, we have 550 total arrests of violent criminals, including dozens of firearms and 40 drug seizures... When you walk around the streets, you notice the difference." https://t.co/zbWUMMHXn7
