Philipsen, who had won the first stage and was a prominent contender, was visibly injured and unable to continue the race. Later in the Tour, Remco Evenepoel, the white jersey holder from Soudal-QuickStep, also withdrew during the 14th stage between Paul and Luchon-Superbagnères after falling behind the peloton on the climb of the Tourmalet.
