Belgian sprinter Jasper Philipsen won the opening stage of the 2025 Tour de France in Lille, claiming the first yellow jersey of the race. Philipsen, riding for Alpecin-Deceuninck, secured his tenth stage victory by out-sprinting a reduced group, finishing ahead of Eritrean rider Biniam Girmay. However, Philipsen's Tour was cut short when he suffered a heavy crash during the third stage between Valenciennes and Dunkerque, forcing him to abandon the race due to a shoulder injury sustained in the incident involving French cyclist Bryan Coquard. Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel won the second stage in Boulogne-sur-Mer, taking over the yellow jersey from Philipsen. Norwegian rider Jonas Abrahamsen claimed victory in the 11th stage around Toulouse after a long breakaway, while defending champion Tadej Pogacar crashed near the finish but did not lose time to his rivals. Pogacar later regained the yellow jersey by winning the 12th stage to Hautacam with a margin of over two minutes against Danish competitor Jonas Vingegaard. Pogacar extended his lead by winning the 13th stage individual time trial at Peyragudes. Belgian Tim Wellens secured a solo win on the 15th stage in Carcassonne. Mathieu van der Poel, who had been a prominent contender and stage winner, withdrew before the 16th stage due to pneumonia. The 2025 Tour de France concluded with Pogacar winning his fourth overall title, placing him among cycling legends such as Eddy Merckx and Miguel Induráin. He earned the highest individual prize money from a total purse of approximately €2.578 million for the event. In the women's Tour de France, Spanish cyclist Mavi Garcia won the second stage, while Mauritian rider Kim Le Court became the first African to wear the yellow jersey.
