The inquiry highlights figures such as Daniel Křetínský, Matthieu Pigasse, Rodolphe Saadé, Xavier Niel, and George Soros as key financiers supporting progressive and left-wing press in France. Notably, Daniel Křetínský, a Czech billionaire with a background in the coal industry, reportedly invested €15 million to rescue the leftist newspaper Libération, which maintains a critical stance against the ultra-rich. Rodolphe Saadé, a Franco-Lebanese billionaire and close associate of President Emmanuel Macron, has built a substantial media empire over three years through CMA Média, investing approximately €2 billion. His holdings include Brut, BFM TV, La Tribune Dimanche, La Provence, Corse Matin, RMC, and Chérie 25. Saadé is pursuing the acquisition of the anti-police outlet Brut and aims to compete with media mogul Vincent Bolloré. Xavier Niel finances several left-leaning outlets such as Le Monde, L’Obs, HuffPost, and Le Crayon, the latter being described as “neutral and independent” but supported by Niel. The magazine also reports that some media outlets like StreetPress are dependent on Soros’ funding, who also finances NGOs and associations. The investigation reveals tactics used by Křetínský to influence editorial lines, including threatening to sell media assets to far-right investors to enforce compliance. The report further notes Saadé’s interest in digital innovation and artificial intelligence integration in media, exemplified by La Provence’s use of AI for vocal article reading. Frontières positions its investigation as a counterpoint to frequent media coverage of right-wing billionaire financiers like Bolloré and Stérin, emphasizing the less-discussed left-wing billionaire influence on French media.
