A massive wildfire has been raging in the Aude department of southern France since August 5, 2025, marking the largest fire of the summer and one of the most extensive in recent decades. The fire has rapidly spread, consuming approximately 14,000 hectares of land across 15 communes, including the Corbières massif. Over 1,800 firefighters and emergency personnel have been deployed to combat the blaze, supported by a fleet of aerial firefighting aircraft including up to nine Canadairs and multiple Dash water bombers. The fire has caused significant destruction, with at least 25 houses burned and several farms affected. Authorities have closed major transportation routes such as the A9 and A61 highways near the fire zone as a precaution. The fire's rapid progression has led to evacuations of several communities, including a camping site near Lagrasse and residents in towns like Jonquières and Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse. Tragically, the wildfire has resulted in one confirmed death—a woman who reportedly refused to evacuate her home—and nine injuries, including three firefighters, with one injury classified as serious. Emergency officials have urged residents within the fire's vicinity to stay indoors and avoid overloading emergency lines. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that all national resources are mobilized to address the crisis. Government officials, including Prime Minister François Bayrou and Senator Bruno Retailleau, are scheduled to visit the affected area. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The situation remains challenging due to strong winds reaching up to 50 km/h, which have complicated firefighting efforts overnight. The fire continues to be active and is not yet contained.
